If everyone else recalls the “The Dress” photo controversy that went viral in 2015, you’ll find that J.Lo ‘s latest marine manicure has sparked a similar discussion. This is the colour conundrum is the polish black? Is it navy blue? It’s somebody’s guess, but one thing is for sure it’s the answer for those who are sick of painting taupes, pumpkin oranges, and browns on their nails.

Unfortunately, the renowned nail artist Tom Bachik, who did this particular collection (and several of Lopez ‘s previous classic manicures) has yet to announce the exact hue he used for her manicure. But he did note that it was a new fall color from The GelBottle Inc. After a little sleuthing, the darkest colour in the autumn series of the brand seems to be Runway, a navy blue with gray undertones.

It’s the right colour, no matter whether you’re seeing black or blue, whether neutrals and orange-colored polishes are starting to bore you. Paired with her shimmering $1 million engagement ring and a beautiful reusable cup, the usual moody vibe that ultra dark manicures are always branded is not the case here.

Lopez’s tips were set in a square shape and the top coat gave the manicure an ultra-gloss finish and an extra-opulent look. It’s worth mentioning that this minute detail is a major change from last year’s matte nails that were all over Instagram.

In 2020 the stars appear to have taken a taste of this lustrous finish instead. Case in point: Kylie Jenner’s chestnut brown extensions of the last week and their reflective top coat and even Lizzo’s “VOTE” manicure at the Billboard Music Awards were shiny. If your eye is taken by this dark tone and shiny top coat, you should give your neutral lacquers a boot and test these borderline black and navy nail polish shades, like Lopez’s, below.
