ICYMI: Fall shoes aren’t what they used to be, and that’s all right. Although fashion enthusiasts have been swift to reintroduce polished daywear into their wardrobes, as a no-fail way to keep things casual, they have adhered to the same few off-duty shoe types. Since it is clear that post-lockdown footwear will be the last to catch up, it might be a perfect time to invest in a go-to pair of fashion sneakers now. They are sure to get lots of wear this way as offices stay closed and features stay on hold. The New Balance x Staud sneakers by Katie Holmes are a real place to start (or, maybe, end) your quest, and her latest look offers welcome tips on how to wear them.

The actress was seen in New York City with her boyfriend Emilio Vitolo Jr. on Oct. 5, wearing a layered fall look along with a sneaker. She layered a gray wool trench with a matching scarf, along with a pair of straight-leg classic blue jeans, past her celeb-loved Evolve Together mask. Then her sneakers came, an updated 327 model that was the pinnacle of the fall collection influenced by New Balance and Staud’s ’90s. The latest silhouette looks like a decades-old classic in a white leather body with an exaggerated bordeaux logo, and it could very well become one at the pace it goes. The sneaker makes the ideal balance between loungewear and daywear in place of shoes, which would otherwise have accompanied Holmes’ lunch outfit. Here’s hoping it’s a mainstay in the closet of Holmes.

The shoe is currently available secondhand, on sites such as Stockx, after being sold out within minutes of its late September launch. There are dozens of other types on offer that mimic the look in case you are unable to pilfer it from there in your size. A prime example is Veja’s leather shoes, and they’re a Meghan Markle favorite. Try Valentino or Chloé, both of which call on deep red accents like New Balance’s, for slightly more upmarket versions.
