It’s the season to experiment in all-new ways with fun, boisterous prints. That’s what the royal family is doing at least. Kate Middleton’s plaid outfit brings her favorite design to the next stage, which she appears to rely on a little more during the holiday season. The Duchess of Cambridge imbues the checked print in her new look in not one, not two, but three forms, and it is evidence that when it comes to accessories, there is no such thing as too much coordination. To her otherwise-simplistic style file, add some points for maximalism, as this one is primed for extraverted dressers.

On Dec. 8, with a visit to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, Middleton and Prince William ended their UK tour to thank the National Health Service staff for their tireless efforts during the course of the pandemic. Middleton wore her usual red trench coat for the occasion from her favorite British designer, Alexander McQueen, but she called on a few extra items this time, all in festive tartan print. First, her face mask (which showed her £ 62 square hoop earrings from Spells of Love perfectly); then, her long scarf (which she gracefully threw over one shoulder); and finally, Emilia Wickstead’s tea-length skirt.

The rest of the look acted as a palette cleanser of the boisterous hues and prints-a turtleneck, Polo Ralph Lauren suede boots, leather gloves, and Grace Han’s favorite top-handle purse, all in the same black jet shade. Overall, even if you are only meeting with others in your home, the impactful look is ideal for any pre-holiday gift shopping, or for the actual day-of celebrations itself.

Although her plaid skirt is currently sold out, J.Crew provides a trove of like” styles to replicate this head-to-toe look, all of which sync together just like Middleton’s. When it comes to styling, scarves are always an afterthought, but the accessory is front and centre by keeping to a streamlined color palette here. Her coat has been out of stock for some time as well but Saint Laurent creates a double-breasted silhouette that’s almost a dupe of her McQueen design. Catch her precise earrings, purse, and boots from there and you’re ready to go.
