“Borrowing from boys” is not a new idea in the fashion industry, but casual men’s apparel was a major trend during the fashion week. The revival of the waistcoats and vests has already taken the fashion set by storm, and there is no question that the boxy blazers will again be a cool-weather staple. This year, though, the iconic and typically organized staples have a fresh, casual feel. Based on J.Lo’s menswear-inspired look, shopping at the men’s section (or just dressing as you did) gives you a simple, effortless and relaxed way to add polish to your fall wardrobe.
Whatever Jennifer Lopez is wearing, she ‘s wearing it well. But the 51-year-old musician, actress, and entrepreneur has a tradition of preferring more colorful, feminine parts (who can forget Versace ‘s dress). So, when she wore an oversized set featuring a white oversized button-down top, similarly oversized brown pleated pants, and brown leather shoes in Los Angeles on Oct. 17, the look was unexpected.
While there were a couple of her trademark touches: hoop earrings, bulky shades, and even a glitter clip on the lapel, Lopez’s new look varies from her signature style, which is mostly a mix of vivid color palettes, dramatic designs, and shape-fitting silhouettes. Case in point: earlier this month, she wore a teal blue ensemble by LAPOINTE for a date night with fiancé Alex Rodriguez. That said, the native of New York is welcoming the more casual trends that have taken the fashion world by storm.
J.Lo ‘s surprising set looks like an ensemble from Ashley and Mary-Kate ‘s minimalist label The Row. The Spring / Summer 2021 Luxury Label Line marked the return of men’s clothes to the forefront of women’s wear, including plenty of bulky items like casual yet fitted suits, sweater tops, and classic shirts and trousers much like Lopez’s. The Row wasn’t the only brand that welcomed the movement, however. Louis Vuitton’s line followed suit as did Cecilie Bahnsen, who had just begun her partnership with Mackintosh, adding a romantic touch to the classic menswear coats.
To make Lopez look the same for the warmer days of the season, consider keeping the bottom of the top undone. Or, when things cool off, a layer on a chunky cardigan or a vest when part of more complicated collections.
