The ’90s was renowned one after the other for churning out hit teen movies. If you weren’t lusting about Heath Ledger in 10 Things I Hate About You, you probably took fashion notes from one of the biggest blockbusters of that era: Clueless. You certainly remember (and maybe even have recreated) the matching plaid skirt-suit sets Cher and Dionne’s main character wear and even Cher ‘s red slip-dress, but now it’s time to celebrate Clueless’s most famous beauty moments, in celebration of the 25 year anniversary of the film.

Yes , you read that right: this year the 1995 film marks its 25th anniversary. The teen movie that follows Beverly Hills’ best friends as they play matchmaker (which is loosely based on Jane Austen ‘s novel Emma) grossed more than $56.6 million at the box office, although it wasn’t expected to achieve what is now its classic status. So along with delivering famous lines such as “as if” so exposing the audience to the dreamy Paul Rudd, the film is a licensed look book from clothes to the elegance of the trademark of the 1990s.

Cher Horowitz (played by Alicia Silverstone) and Dionne Davenport (played by Stacey Dash), the movie’s actresses, of course, have the most famous fashion moments with items like monochrome pink lipstick and rope braids, respectively. However, supporting characters like Amber Mariens (played by Elisa Donovan) also looks like amazing pigtails.

Take a trip down the memory lane and keep reading from Clueless for nine of the best moments of elegance (and perhaps also obtain some inspiration).

1. Cher’s Brown Lipstick

While Cher is in the early stages of luring in her first love interest Christian Stovitz, she offers few tips on how to get men’s affection, one is Anything you can do to draw attention to your mouth is good.” And in this scene her brown lipstick certainly works, if not to make Stovitz fall for her than to have a very glamorous ’90s beauty moment.

2. Dionne’s Flower Hat

It can be claimed that the movie’s most covetable and quirky theme comes from Cher’s best friend, Dionne. Case in point: She wears the tall white, black-brimmed, black-bowed, pink-flower-adorned hat in her first appearance on stage. It’s big and in charge and Dionne says she isn’t here to play with her style. And while in the film she wears a ton of cap, this one is quite the showstopper.

3. Chunky Headbands

Blair Waldorf who? More than 10 years before Gossip Girl ever crossed the radars of the public and thereby defined the signature fashion accessories of Blair Waldorf, Clueless’ girls were sporting chunky headbands. Although Dionne’s has a sporty look in a clean white hue, with its velvet lining, Cher’s could be plucked out of the runways of today.

4. Amber’s Pigtails

The character of Amber Mariens may be on the snobbier side, but she has amazing moments of beauty one of which is this pigtail case. The double ponytails are put high on the top of her head, with cascading curves falling to her chest; without being too infantile, they are sweet and playful. And it would be ridiculous not to mention her bangs, which are similar to the baby-bang length throughout the rest of the film (clearly ahead of her time).

5. Cher’s Monochrome Pink Makeup

In comparison to other movies like Moulin Rouge, makeup isn’t Clueless ‘s beauty hero. However, as Cher attempted to win over Stovitz, it had a serious moment as he donned a totally monochrome pink face (and dress and earrings and hair clip). While her punchy pink lip, flushed cheeks, and a couple of eyeshadow highlight swipes didn’t actually get her the guy, it was still an iconic look (and one that keeps on trending in 2020).

6. The Girls’ Wedding Looks

There’s no better way to finish a film than with beautiful makeup. Tai Fraiser’s (played by Brittany Murphy) is plain, not straying from her usual curls seen in the show, while Cher and Dionne head for the wedding scene in full ’90s. Cher’s blonde tresses are swept to the front while Dionne has hot pink and baby pink puffs sprinkled all over her waves.

7. Everyone’s Barrettes

Barrettes have made a major resurgence in recent years because they were once a ’90s tried-and true fashion product. Particularly this scene had about sixbarrets emerging in less than 20 seconds. Especially noticeable are the kitschy, purple sunflower variations of Dionne followed by the two blue ones on each side of Tai ‘s head (and even most of the background characters in this clip wear some sort of barrette).

8. Cher’s Voluminous Hair

Let’s be honest: The Clueless star was the hair of Cher. It has always coiffed well with a good amount of volume aka optimal but not excessive. The blonde locks were often left down and simple in the movie with tiny blips of updos and accessories; but, as little as Cher ‘s hair seemed to take on new forms, hairstylist Nina Paskowitz assured Mashable Cher ‘s hair became different for every change of outfit sometimes as tiny as changing the portion.

9. Dionne’s Ribbon Braids

Dionne is holding the award once again for best hair accessories. This time, she intertwined pink and green ribbon into her braids, which also seemed to suit her top perfectly. It was quick but just applied the right amount of flair to complete a Dionne feel. And with hair scarves through in 2020, ribbon could be having a revival accepted by Dionne as well.
